Novel HS ELA Curriculum

Novel HS ELA Curriculum

Novel’s HS ELA is a a novel-based, research-grounded, knowledge-building reading and writing curriculum, designed for a 60-minute ELA block for grades 9-12. Designed as a continuation of Novel MS ELA, Novel HS ELA is a vertically-aligned continuum representing the core literature and writing courses for English I, II, III, and IV, as well as optional Advanced Placement pathways for AP Seminar (10th), AP Language and Composition (11th), and AP Literature (12th) in the upper grade levels.

Our scope and sequence is Common Core aligned and grounded in the Science of Reading, designed to carefully build knowledge, skill, and rigor across the grade levels to ensure that by the end of high school, students are prepared to experience success at both the Advanced Placement and college course levels. In addition to a rich array of fiction and nonfiction supplemental texts, the curriculum centers the reading of full novels in every unit, a unique feature in a curriculum landscape that increasingly relies on passage-based reading.

The flexibility of our course pathways and our choice unit offerings provide ample opportunities for teacher choice, and the curriculum also includes units designed for student choice based on text interest.

A key feature of our curriculum is usability and clarity of exemplars, which offer value for both the veteran teacher and the more novice teacher. Our robust suite of instructional materials includes the following for every unit of study:

  • unit plans, text selection rationale, and standard mapping;

  • daily lesson plans with embedded guidance for supporting diverse learners and multilingual learners;

  • editable daily classwork handouts and daily differentiated handouts for diverse learners;

  • daily slide decks aligned to the lesson;

  • a diverse array of formative and summative assessments, including cold-passage quizzes and tests, on-demand writing, Socratic seminars and other oral assessments, process-based performance task writing, and other daily assessments of varying formats;

  • robust exemplars, rubrics, and norming materials for all assessments;

    • our partnership with EnlighenAI further supports teachers with AI-powered grading with precisely trained feedback for all Novel writing assignments;

  • Novel provides ample guidance to support instructional routines and implementation, all outlined in our HS Teacher Toolkit.
