Novel’s Middle School ELA Curriculum
Novel’s MS ELA curriculum is a culturally-responsive, research-based 6-8 literacy curriculum that is aligned to Common Core State Standards and incorporates both reading and writing instruction into a single block.
What makes our curriculum different?
Each unit centers on a main text or collection of short texts alongside several essential questions;
Each lesson integrates evidence-based discussion to encourage students to cultivate listening and speaking skills while collaboratively constructing meaning together. Most units integrate full structured Socratic seminar days to celebrate these skills while expounding upon the unit’s core ideas;
Each lesson includes explicit vocabulary instruction or disciplinary knowledge builders to help students unlock the meaning of that day’s reading;
Each unit elevates writing and grammar in the context of reading and application. There are daily opportunities for students to write about reading, and after students have read the main text, each unit includes an extended writing project - argumentative, narrative, or informational - that is thematically connected to the text with embedded grammar instruction.
